The future

In Sebastian Faulks’ most recent novel A Possible Life – which I highly recommend by the way – there is a section set in the future. It isn’t so obviously the future, as the differences to the way of life are subtle enough to be believable. It’s actually pretty disturbing because of this. One of the changes in this future time is that people can pay for things by scanning a chip in their hand as they exit the cafe, shop, or wherever it is they’ve been. Today I got a new bank card and it comes with the ability for ‘contactless payment’. So, basically, I can purchase items costing a relatively small amount by just scanning my card. No chip and pin required. This development seems like we’re just a few steps away from a novelist’s version of the future…
