Smells on stage

One of the things I really love experiencing when I go to the theatre is being able to smell what is happening on stage. I don’t mean this in a slightly disgusting way, like being able to smell the body odour of performers (although this can have its place), what I mean is more generally things like when an actor lights a cigarette, or eats food, or sprays perfume and you can smell it. Smell is one of the most powerful of senses as it can evoke so much – getting it right on stage just heightens the liveness of the event, making it all the more powerful.

So the next time you go to the theatre, pay attention to what you can smell from the on stage world or what you wish you could.
